- Postdoctoral
I worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the Environmental Hydrogeology group of Utrecht University for 2.5 years. My main focus now was on contaminant transport and dispersion in saturated and unsaturated media using experiments and computer modeling. The main ideas were to (1) investigate solute transport from the soil surface to and within groundwater, and (2) find relationships between the dispersivity and water saturation as well as the pore size distribution (including soil texture). Furthermore, I worked on the effects of sand packing and mixing on pore structure and the unsaturated soil hydraulic properties using physical flow experiment, X-ray tomography and computer modeling. I also contributed to a project entitled “Bioremediation of a petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated soil: pilot experiment”
-PhD
As part of my PhD, I worked on chemical oxidation processes of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the unsaturated zone through both experimentation and numerical modeling. The main objective of my PhD project was to use a partially-saturated horizontal permeable reactive barrier, consisting of solid potassium permanganate, to diminish the upward migration of VOC vapors towards indoor spaces. I found that horizontal permeable reactive barriers (as a novel method) provide a very viable option for preventing VOC vapors to reach the land surface.
